A Look Back at the Three-Day Weekend

According to The New Yorker, there is a big discrepancy concerning the name of yesterday's federal holiday. Is it President's Day, Presidents' Day, or Presidents Day??

A true quandary.

The real name for yesterday's federal holiday is WASHINGTON'S Birthday. Now, the 3rd Monday in February will never fall on the date of George Washington's true birthday, but American students, federal employees, bankers, and other celebrants can enjoy a three day winter weekend - not such a bad deal.

Why is the holiday technically known as Washington's Birthday now referred to as President's/s'/s Day? Once again, the greed and materialism of American culture rears its splashy sales signs and tempts us to use our credit cards. So if Valentine's Day is a card-company holiday, President's/s'/s Day has been claimed by the department stores. Bye bye, February holidays!

I hope you enjoyed your three-day weekend. This post may be a day late and a dollar short, but hey, power shopping comes first on a three day weekend!
